Qatargas would supply 1 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year under a long term agreement to Thailand’s PTT Public Company Limited, the company said, marking a new Asian market after Japan.

The LNG will be supplied into the Bangkok LNG terminal when it becomes operational in 2011, the company said. It will be capable of receiving the cargoes using the new Q-Flex and Q-Max class of vessels.

PTT Company intends on using the LNG to supply mainly power companies and industrial users, the statement said without further details.

“We are pleased with this exciting market development. Thailand represents a new market for the LNG industry and Qatari LNG and further demonstrates our commitment to diversity of markets for our energy,” said Faisal M. Al Suwaidi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Qatargas Operating Company Ltd.

“We have been in contact with PTT Public Company Limited for some time and are pleased that we have been able to conclude this milestone agreement.”

Qatargas, the world’s largest producer of LNG, exports the liquefied gas to Japan, its principal market. It also supplies Spain and recently begun its exports to Mexico.

Qatar plans to boost total production of LNG to 77 million tonnes per year in 2010, up from 31 million tonnes now. Qatar has the world’s third-largest reserves of natural gas after Russia and Iran.
