Shell’s new VP for innovation and chemicals technology

Bill Rothwell, currently General Manager, Ethylene Oxide/Glycols for Shell Chemicals, has been appointed to the role of Vice President Innovation and Chemicals Technology for Shell Global Solutions International, effective from 1 March 2007 .
Bill will be based in Houston and will have global responsibility for identifying and leveraging innovation and chemicals technology across the Shell Group, including Shell Chemicals.
"Shell is committed to turning innovative ideas into commercial applications for providing the energy and petrochemicals that societies need to grow and prosper," said Rothwell.
"I will be accountable for meeting the technology needs of Shell Chemicals, leveraging Shell Global Solutions' chemical research and development capabilities to benefit the broader Shell Group and licensees, and contributing to the identification and assessment of longer-term Group chemicals technology options."
A Shell employee for more than 26 years, Bill has a strong technical background combined with extensive experience in strategy and business roles.
He joined the Shell Group in 1980 with a PhD in Physical Chemistry from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), where he specialised in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and has undergraduate degrees in mathematics and chemistry from Michigan State University .
In his first decade in the Shell Group, Bill worked as a research manager and research chemist at the Westhollow Technology Centre in Houston . In 1990 he moved to the Shell offices in Houston and over the next seven years worked in a number of strategy, planning and business assignments.
In 1998 Bill relocated to London and served as Head of Strategy, Planning and Ventures for Shell Chemicals.
In 2002, Bill was appointed to his current position in Chemicals, leading Shell's global Ethylene Oxide/Glycols business and working with the Group's regional business teams all over the world to serve the needs of customers.
