Abu Dhabi has completed projects to expand crude oil production capacity to nearly 2.8 million barrels per day and is pushing ahead with plans to reach four million bpd by 2010. Besides oil, new projects cover expansion of production of natural gas, petrochemicals and urea, Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO and Exploration and Production Director, of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) told Pipeline Magazine.
How do you classify Adnoc among world companies in terms of oil production and will it be able to maintain its position in the future?
Adnoc....has always been a key player in the world oil market and the focus is to build on its achievement. Its production has increased by 25% over the last two years and is currently developing new fields with the objective to increase daily oil output from 2.8 million bpd to four million bpd by 2010. This is our commitment to the world market that will define Adnoc's role in satisfying the increasing world demand for hydrocarbon products.
Can you give us a brief overview on Adnoc's achievements in the past few years and its expected role in the world oil market in the future?
The last few years for Adnoc were full of major initiatives and achievements.
In June 2006 Adnoc celebrated the first graduation ceremony of the Petroleum Institute, which opened its doors to its first entry class in September 2000 for a group of 140 students.
Since then, the institute students' body has grown to more than 800. We are also proud to announce that by fall 2006, Adnoc will welcome its first group of 150 female students joining the Institute.
In March 2006 Adnoc signed a new partnership with ExxonMobil along with the Zakum Development Company (Zadco). ExxonMobil is considered one of the leading firms in the world oil and gas industry. This, with no reservation, will indeed benefit Zadco through augmentation of new technology.
In May 2004 Adnoc launched a health, safety and environment (HSE) codes of practice project. The code is a set of high level standards that set out a series of principles that must be incorporated to ensure that Adnoc and its group of companies encompass the appropriate and necessary systems and procedures related to HSE.
In June 2002 Adnoc launched the competence assurance management system with the objective of facilitating the development and implementation of a competence framework of minimum standards across the group companies. This will ensure all individuals and teams can perform HSE and business critical tasks effectively to the level required through the development of all staff.
In January 2002 Adnoc, together with the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company and Zadco completed the largest ocean bottom 3D seismic survey ever acquired in the world over 1,800 square kilometres over a Zakum field.
Will Adnoc continue its expansion programme in the medium and long term? Does the programme depend on global oil demand in terms of size and investment and does it include both oil and gas?
Adnoc acknowledges the world oil market demand and will continue to be a major contributor to the oil and gas industry. Currently, some of Adnoc's main projects involve: increasing oil production capacity to meet the global demand; expanding gas production capacity to meet increasing local demand; the Borouge company expansion to produce and market the products of polyethylene and polypropylene; the Ruwais industrial complex expansion resulting from new Adnoc joint venture with AMI of Austria with the aim of producing melamine products; and increasing urea production
