New safety record for Adnoc

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s subsidiaries, National Drilling Company (NDC) and Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Operations (ADCO) announce that a drilling rig has achieved an internationally significant record.

ND-01 is an onshore drilling rig owned and operated by NDC under a contract with ADCO. The rig has worked for ten years without anybody on the rig having a lost time injury. This means that over the last 10 years no one has missed the next day working shift due to an accident.

About 100 persons work on rig ND-01. This includes NDC, ADCO, Service Company and catering staff. Over the ten years nearly five million man-hours have been achieved without serious injury to any staff.

Strong HSE leadership by both NDC and ADCO is an important factor to this success. The strict application of an HSE Management System encourages staff to provide a safe working environment. Such a system gives assurance that all aspects of HSE are covered. This includes risk assessment, applicable permits and job safety discussions before each operation and task. Reporting HSE incidents allows corrective action to prevent future problems. All personnel on the rig participate actively in behavior-based safety initiatives and are committed to keeping their workplace accident free.

ND-01 was built in 1973 and started work for NDC / ADCO in 1973 and it can drill wells to a depth of 16,000 feet.

This safety performance is remarkable because of the continuous moving and lifting of heavy equipment. The rig derrick can lift pipe up to one million pounds. Twenty-ton cranes move pipe around the location. Oilfield trucks, bulldozers and wheel dozers move the rig across desert terrain.

Worldwide drilling rig HSE statistics are shared through NDC’s membership of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC). Which specify that only one rig out of 250 working rigs should achieve this records while in NDC 2 rigs out of 26 rigs on operation achieved this records.

This achievement of zero Loss Time Incident in ten years puts NDC in an elite class from a global perspective. Therefore it is seen as a major milestone.

A celebration is organized at the rig site in the Asab Field on 30 May 2006 where the General Manager of NDC, Mr. Abdul Munim Saif AL Kendi and Mr. Kent Wells ADCO General Manager and other honored guests will acknowledge this great achievement by the rig staff.
