Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Co. (Sasref) recently signed two major contracts for Phase II of the Refinery Instrumentation Master Plan Projects.
Sasref signed the contracts with Petrocon Arabia Ltd. (PAL) and Yokogawa Middle East (YME).
In a signing ceremony on May 22 attended by executives from the three companies and Sasref project management staff, Mohammad A. Al-Omair, Sasref's president and managing director; Gordon Cowe, Petrocon Arabia Ltd.'s director for Saudi Arabia; and Akira Ogawa, president and CEO of Yokogawa Middle East, signed the contract on behalf of their companies.
PAL will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction management contractor and YME as the main automation contractor.
The project's completion and commissioning, and the startup of the new facilities are expected by the end of 2008.
"This project is the second and final phase of the Instrumentation Master Plan (IMP) program," Al-Omair said. "The program is based on ensuring business continuity and reliable operations at Sasref's plants for the next decade and beyond."
The project will boost Sasref's "international competitiveness as a firmly established pacesetter refinery," Al-Omair said.
IMP Major Projects manager Ahmad Al-Abdrabbuh said this second stage of the project will replace the obsolete relay-based Instrumented Protective System (IPS or Safeguarding system) and its field instruments, the Distributed Control System and its field instruments and qu ality measurement instruments, stand-alone automation systems and applications, and integrate them with earlier stages of the IMP program.
Sasref is a 50-50 joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Shell with a production capacity of 305,000 barrels per day. It is an export refinery where Arabian Light Crude is upgraded into high-qu ality refined products, including kerosene, naphtha, benzene, fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gas.
