Statoil ASA and Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) said they have entered into a three-year technology collaboration agreement to develop new production optimisation technologies to extend the life of oil and gas fields.

In addition to the development of new technologies, this agreement calls for standardizing and automating workflow processes with the ultimate goal of increasing oil recovery and accelerating production. This involves the identification of best practices and information management processes for the complete producing asset, including the processing facilities. The agreement is valued at $16 million.

“The goal of the project Production and Process Optimization is to develop methodology, technology and IT solutions that will enable us to have a set of consistent and updated models of the subsurface and topside facilities as a tool for improved reservoir and production management,” said Rolf H. Utseth, vice president of research and technology, Subsea Increased Oil Recovery, Statoil.

A significant part of the project is testing new technologies in both new and producing assets, to ensure that the vision of integrated operations is achieved. The fields chosen for field tests will include fields with smart wells, a high percentage of instrumented wells and a high-qu ality communication infrastructure.

Statoil will identify and execute pilots on the Norwegian continental shelf where new technologies will be tested and deployed. “We are striving to improve utilization of reservoir, well and processing capacity,” said Utseth.

“This collaborative project will accelerate the development of new production technologies to improve decision-making from front-end engineering to automated operations—and deliver practical solutions towards the re alization of the digital oil field,” said Olivier Le Peuch, president, SIS. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with a recognized industry leader in improved oil recovery. The extensive design and testing in real field scenarios afforded by Statoil will speed broader industry implementation.”

Additional project components will evaluate how combining real-time and manual data sources with the PRODML production data standard can improve information management in production operations and collaboration across oil and gas assets.

Statoil and Schlumberger have had a joint collaboration agreement in place for a number of years. This project will be integrated into the existing framework along with other successful joint collaboration initiatives.
