Bahrain Petroleum Company ( Bapco) has signed a $140 million engineering, procurement and construction contract with Foster Wheeler to reduce sulphur hydrogen at its refinery.
Under the environment-friendly project, the level of sulphur hydrogen will be brought down to 150 particles per million, in line with world metrological standards.
Bapco chairman Shaikh Salman bin Kh ali fa Al Kh ali fa said this new refinery is the largest amount ever spent in the country on a project aimed solely at improving the environment.
This project is part of a larger environmental compliance plan which Bahrain has agreed with in 1999. The commissioning of the plant’s process units is expected at the first quarter of 2008.
Al Kh ali fa said: "The overall aggregated value of these contracts is in excess of $2 billion. Safety during the execution of projects, and respect for the environment are our two most important values."
Bapco's acting chief executive, downstream, Abdulkarim Al Sayed, added: “The new plant would reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere by 94 per cent.
Based on projections by an independent consultant, the amount of sulphur dioxide in the air emitted by Bapco will surpass local and international environmental standards when the new plant becomes operational.’
"The project will also reduce hydrogen sulphide in fuel gas to less than 150 part per million (ppm), which is well below the government's environmental regulation limit.
The crude oil processed in the refinery contains sulphur, some of which is converted to hydrogen sulphide gas in the various refinery processes,” Al Sayed said.
