Vela to acquire six new crude tankers

Vela International Marine Limited announced on Saturday it has signed contracts with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co to build six very large crude carriers (VLCCs) at its Okpo Shipyard in the Republic of Korea.
 The ships will be built to Vela's high specifications and standards, including state-of-the-industry, high-technology systems and fittings.
Saleh B. K'aki, Vela President and Chief Executive Officer said: “We believe in having the highest standards that will ensure Vela has the best fleet in the world in terms of reliability, safety and environmentally friendly operations.”
Each ship will have a deadweight of about 318,000 tonnes, carrying about 2.2 million barrels of Arabian crude oil.
"We chose this design because it allows Vela the flexibility to serve our customers," said Tom Allen, Vela's commercial manager.
The first VLCC is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2008, with sister ships to follow at the rate of one per quarter.
"When all are delivered these new ships will demonstrate Vela's commitment to ensuring our customers have the best tonnage available to them," said Captain Bader Ghouth, Vela's manager of Operations
