DNV opened its office in Libya on 1 February.

The sanctions regime imposed on Libya in the past by the United States and the United Nations has to a large degree now been withdrawn. As a consequence, DNV wishes to assist the oil and gas industry players in safeguarding life, property and the environment in Libya as it does in some other 100 countries, DNV says in a statement.

Libya is currently considered by many energy analysts to be one of the most attractive oil and gas producing countries in the world. The political and economic situation is stable and the Libyan oil is generally of a fair quality.

DNV's Country Manager Dines Haslund and Business Development Manager Jan Anders Solli have been in place in Tripoli since August last year, setting up the office and its operations.

Along with the official opening of the DNV office was a two-day professional conference. Topics included environmental impact assessment, system certification, sustainable business issues, risk management, operability review/asset operation, pipelines and HSE matters.

Haslund said: "This is a great opportunity for us to tell our oil and gas clients what we will be doing in Libya, and for our potential clients to understand what our large pool of experts which may well be useful to our clients in Libya as well".
