The Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO) said it will bring on stream 110,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil from its North East Bab fields in the second quarter this year, increasing crude production capacity to 1.4 million bpd.

"The company commissioned 100,000 bpd of crude oil in 2005 and in the second quarter of this year an additional 110,000 bpd will come from the North East Bab fields," said Saeed A Khoory, ADCO Assistant General Manager (Technical), as quoted by Gulf News.

"Although our production is as per quotas from the shareholders, we are building additional capacity," he told reporters.

The UAE is expanding production to 3.5 million barrels per day in the short term, Mohammad Bin Dha'en Al Hamili, Minister of Energy, said late last year. Average crude production was about 2.5 million bpd in 2005. "ADCO's crude output in 2005 averaged 1.2 million bpd," said Khoory. Offshore fields produced the balance. ADCO's increased production will come from the three North East Bab fields of Al Dabbiya, Rumaitha and Shanayel. Current production at another smaller field, Huwaila, is about 10,000 bpd.

Earlier, Khoory announced that ADCO would host the fifth International Corrosion Conference from February 6-8 in Abu Dhabi. More than 25 experts and 250 professional will attend the conference that will focus on issues relating to corrosion in the oil industry.

"The issue of corrosion is critical in this region, especially in the oil industry. Most of the facilities built 30 years ago are coming to the end of their lives and the next 30 years will see a different mode of operation."

Saleh Al Whedi, ADCO's project manager, said the company completed the first phase of an ongoing $60 million project in 2005 to install cathodic protection systems at all ADCO wells to protect them from corrosion. "We have also replaced traditional steel tubing in some of the very corrosive wells with corrosion resistant alloy tubing to prolong the life of the wells which are major assets for ADCO and the UAE."
