Pakistan's Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has approved a proposal to start negotiations with Dubai Ports World (DP World) as potential operator of Gwdar Port in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan.
Presiding over a high-level meeting in Islamabad, Aziz was informed that the Gwadar Port will be ready for operation by mid 2006, Pakistan Radio said. " Gwadar Port will be functional by the middle of this year after completion of additional dredging of the channel to fourteen point five meters. This will make it the deepest Port of the country and the transshipment Port for the region," the radio quoted him as saying.
The Pakistani Premier said the completion of Gwadar Port will generate substantial economic opportunities for Baluchistan and usher in a new era of development and prosperity for the people. He said the province will use the Port to fully utilize its mineral development potential.
