The Government of Abu Dhabi announced plans to invite proposals by private investors for the operation and management of municipal solid waste treatment and disposal in the emirate, says WAM.
The announcement follows a recent privatisation of the emirate’s water and electricity sector. It also stems from the Public- Private Partnerships which is being aggressively pursued by the Government.
The project, worth approximately $136 million (AED500 million) is for a 10 year term. It aims to enhance facility utilisation based on international environment standards and regulations, provide market access for recyclable materials such as metals, glass, and plastics and benefit from the experience and capabilities of the private sector.
Juma Aljunaibi, Under Secretary of Abu Dhabi Municipalities and Agriculture said: “The Government of Abu Dhabi views privatisation as a vital engine for the distribution of wealth and for streamlining its infrastructure to become one of the best in the world. In addition, the private sector in the UAE is well positioned to grasp the opportunities created through the privatization program.”
He said the project committee is currently preparing Request for Proposals (RFP) for the project which will be sent to interested investors starting from next week. The contracts for the operation and management of municipal solid waste treatment and disposal activities will involve continuous transfer and disposal of municipal solid waste, construction of new facilities and their operation together with some existing facilities according to international standards.
The existing landfill site, compost plant and transfer station in Mussaffah Industrial City will be closed down to mitigate environmental impact. They will be replaced by state-of-the-art transfer stations, transfer equipment and facilities for mechanical treatment in Al Mafraq. New landfills and composting facilities will be set up in Al Dhafra to ensure efficient and durable services. Solid waste collection services are already being outsourced by the Abu Dhabi Municipality to private operators.
