Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave the green light for the immediate exploration and production of the Camago-Malampaya reservoir in the central province of Palawan.
An executive order was issued allowing the Department of Energy to start the work with the help of the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) and third parties.
"The increasing prices of oil and petroleum products in the world market has made it urgent and imperative for the government to aggressively pursue its energy independence agenda, including the development of domestic oil reserves," said an official statement.
The contractor for the project is a consortium composed of Shell Exploration, Shell Philippines LLC, Chevron Malampaya LLC and PNOC-Exploration Corporation.
