Azeri President Ilham Aliyev and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad opened a natural gas pipeline last month. The pipeline is designed to supply the Nakhichevan province with Iranian gas.

Iran is expected supply the autonomous province with 250 million cubic metres of gas in 2006.

According to the 25-year long deal signed in Baku in August 2004, Azerbaijan will supply Iran with 80.5 million cubic metres of natural gas to Astara.

Iran ’s Ahmadinejad said in a statement quoted by the Azeri news agency that the pipeline would help improve relations with the "friendly" state of Azerbaijan
